How are payment habits changing? Skrill , a globally established digital payments brand that is part of Paysafe , a global payments platform, asked itself this question when it commissioned a study by Sapio Research in October 2023. The aim was to explore the change in consumer spending behavior and their attitudes towards payments. 14,500 consumers were interviewed in Europe, including 1,002 in Italy , North America and Latin America.

The first piece of data that emerges for Italy is the telegram data confirmation that the final purchase phase is a crucial moment for the experience of Italian consumers: 54% of those interviewed would abandon a purchase if they were faced with complications at the time of payment.

The study also found that offering a wider range of payment options is now critical for both large and small online businesses. Despite the continued popularity of traditional payment methods such as debit cards (54%) and credit cards (54%) for holiday shopping, the results showed a notable shift towards alternative payment methods . For example, 56% of Italian consumers prefer digital wallets for online holiday shopping, while 37% regularly use bank transfers and 23% adopt online cash payment solutions , also known as eCash.

Rising living costs are impacting spending habits: 82% of Italian consumers plan to change their spending this holiday season, in line with the global average. With tighter budgets, 33% of Italian consumers plan to spend less on gifts, 14% less on food and drinks (versus 22% globally), and 14% will spend less on socializing and entertainment during the holiday season (versus 19% globally).
